Understanding the IRS Free File Program for Eligible Taxpayers.

The IRS Free File program is a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and private tax software companies that allows eligible taxpayers to prepare and file their federal tax returns for free using online tax preparation software.

To be eligible for the IRS Free File program, taxpayers must have an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $73,000 or less in 2021. Some participating tax software companies may also have additional eligibility criteria, such as age or state residency.

Taxpayers can access the IRS Free File program through the IRS website, which provides a list of participating tax software companies. Each company has its own eligibility requirements, features, and pricing for state tax returns and other services.

It's important to note that while the federal tax return may be free through the IRS Free File program, some participating tax software companies may charge a fee for state tax returns or additional services.

Taxpayers who don't qualify for the IRS Free File program may still be able to use free tax preparation software through the IRS's Free File Fillable Forms program, which allows taxpayers to electronically fill out and file their tax forms for free without the help of tax preparation software.
